You’ve finally arrived in Machupicchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). You’ve checked into your hotel, your backpack is ready, and your alarm is set for an eye-watering 3:30 AM. The excitement is real, but there is one crucial decision left to make before you go to sleep: your pre-hike dinner.
What you eat the night before conquering a World Wonder dictates how you will feel on those steep Inca steps. Eat something too heavy or greasy, and you’ll wake up feeling sluggish. Eat too little, and you’ll run out of energy before you even reach the Sun Gate.
At Mapacho Craft Beer & Peruvian Food, we see hundreds of eager hikers every evening. We know exactly what your body needs to perform at high altitude. Here is our guide to the ultimate pre-hike dinner by the Vilcanota River.
The night before a major physical challenge at high altitude, your goal is simple: you need complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and clean protein for muscle support, all while being easy on the digestive system.
Skip the heavy, deep-fried fast food and treat your body to high-quality Andean ingredients that will fuel your adventure.
The Mapacho «Pre-Trek» Menu:
Quinoa-Crusted Trout: This is the holy grail of pre-hike meals. Our local Andean trout provides incredibly clean, easily digestible protein. Coating it in native quinoa—an ancient superfood packed with complex carbs and amino acids—gives you the exact slow-release energy the Incas relied on.
Three-Cheese Gnocchi: Need to carb-load? Our handmade gnocchi, crafted from native Peruvian potatoes, offers the dense carbohydrates your muscles crave. Eating this early in the evening ensures your glycogen stores are fully packed for the morning climb.
It’s normal to feel a bit of anxiety the night before. Will I make the bus? How hard is the hike? While hydration is your top priority (be sure to drink plenty of water with your meal!), a little relaxation goes a long way. We don’t recommend a heavy night of drinking before your 4 AM wake-up call, but a single, well-crafted beer can be the perfect way to calm your nerves and help you drift off to sleep.
The Relaxing Pint: Order a glass of our crisp Golden Ale. It is our lightest, most refreshing craft beer on tap. It won’t weigh you down or dehydrate you like stronger liquors, but it provides that perfect, soothing end to your travel day.
To ensure you get a full night of rest, we highly recommend planning an early dinner. Drop by Mapacho around 6:00 PM or 6:30 PM. Enjoy the early evening views of the river, eat a nourishing Peruvian meal, and be back in your hotel bed with plenty of time to dream about the ancient city.
The mountain is waiting. Let us provide the fuel.
